All the host nations have now kicked off their tournament and all of them have been pretty impressive so far. Mexico started it all off, and were comfortable 2-0 winners over an awful South African side who looked like they had never met each other in their lives. The South Africans star man being Sphephelo Sithole, who it appeared had a one man quest to ruin the Africans chances. In his 49 minutes on the pitch he managed 24 touches of the football, my guess is that at least 20 of those touches were shit. Sithole was rightfully sent off early in the second half for a blatant foul just outside the box, but the other 2 sending offs from the ref were harsh in my opinion, lets put it this way they are unlikely to be given in the Premier League, having said that if that's the benchmark then teams need to be careful. Despite Sithole's departure South Africa didn't get any better and the were lucky to get 0.
Canada were without doubt the better team against Bosnia, they were energetic, quick and full of running, the only thing they didn't really possess was quality in the final third. If they had better players this lot could be dark horses to go deep in the tournament, they should have enough to beat Qatar in their next game and 4 points will be enough you would think to get out of Group B, unless of course Qatar surprise everyone and smash Switzerland.
Last night (Friday) The US of A started their campaign and despite it being a 2am kick off I stayed up and watched them knock 3 goals past a hapless Paraguay team, it finished 4-1 Cockney I hear you yell, yes it did but I'm an old bastard and fell a kip at half time and didn't find out the final score until Saturday morning, despite this and even though it pains me to say so the Yanks looked pretty good at the old Soccer ball. Paraguay now have a monumental task to try and progress, personally I think they maybe done already, they may get a draw against Australia but if they play like they did in this game then the Socceroos are gonna bounce them out of this tournament quicker than Skippy the bush Kangaroo on speed.
After the first set of games I think its fair to say USA have been the most impressive so far, quickly followed by South Korea, who by the way have scored the best goal of the tournament up to now. Hwang's equaliser was a beautiful goal, he took a touch and left the goalkeeper and two defenders for dead before having to improvise a shot on goal with the ball slightly behind him, which he achieved with great skill. Pure class!!
South Africa have so far been the most dogshit of the teams that have played but Paraguay who I found out improved in the second half (wouldn't know as I was too busy snoring like a drain) are not far behind in the dogshit stakes. To sum it up South Africa were some big dog shit dropped by maybe Scooby Doo and Paraguay not as big, maybe just a Snoopy shit.
Tonight its the big one Qatar v Switzerland, of course I jest. Brazil v Morocco appears to be the first really big game of the World Cup so far and it's going to be a close one, it could go either way. That is of course followed by another 2am game Scotland v Haiti. Hopefully the Scots can get a win as it would be nice to see the Tartan army progress for the first time in their history. I will try my very best to stay up for this one but I can tell you now there is no way on this earth I'm staying up or waking up to see Australia v Turkey at 5am
I'm off to play Mull of Kintyre at full blast and get out my bagpipes
Up the Sweatys!!
